QUEENSTOWN

Introduction:

Queenstown is a neighborhood in Singapore. It is located at the central-western end of the island and about five to eight kilometres away from the city. The total area of Queenstown is about 6.67kilometer square. Queenstown was named after Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain's coronation in 1952. She was also Head of the Commonwealth. She was Singapore's head of state until the country reached its independence. Most of Queenstown's streets' names have been associated with the British Royal Family. The development of Queenstown embarked in 1952.

Before the war in 1942, Queenstown was an agricultural area. The people's occupation depended on the cultivation of vegetables and fruits and the rearing of poultry. There was also a British military camp, known as Buller Camp. It was cleared in 1953 for the development of Queenstown housing estate.

Queenstown now is a well-established estate with many facilities such as markets, a swimming complex, sports stadium, public schools and higher-learning institutes. The Queensway Shopping Centre is well-known shopping centre for sports itemsOther developments that help to brighten up the old estate are private residential units, Swiss furniture giant IKEA's flagship store, and The Anchorage, a condominium-cum-shopping complex.


Queenstown has the honour of being "the Firsts" in many areas such as the first satellite town, HDB flats, library, neighbourhood shopping centre, and the first sports complex.

The Queenstown Community Library is the first public library to open in Singapore in 1970 and it is now a historical attraction of Queenstown. The original name of Queenstown Community Library is Queenstown Branch Library. It was renamed in 1995 when the National Library became the Statutory Board. The Queenstown Community Library is a two-storey building in the centre of a public housing estate in Queenstown. Across the road from the library is a shopping centre, a market and two cinemas.

The Queenstown Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Station (EW19) is an above-ground Mass Rapid Transit station on the East West MRT Line in SingaporeThe station is on the green line. A free shuttle service from this station serves the nearby Alexandra Hospital.

Ikea is a private Swedish company that sells home products internationally. They sell ready-to-assemble furniture and have a wide range of bed, chairs, tables, desks, kitchen appliances and other home accessories. The company is the world's largest furniture retailer. It have modern designs on various furniture pieces. The founder of this successful company is a 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad. He is now one of the richest people in the world.
